Toddler sleep problems plague 4.5 billion parents each year. I just made that up, but I bet it’s A LOT of parents! If your kids are wonderful sleepers, we secretly hate you…in the most loving way possible.
Neither one of our kids is a good sleeper. You know those pictures parents take of their kids passed out on the chair, the stairs, in the middle of the play room? Yeah, I don’t have any of those of my kids. The stars have to be aligned just right, the temperature has to be perfect, the light needs to be on in the hall, all of the blankies need to be just so, and the appropriate number of books has to have been read in order for them to succumb to sleep. Baby and toddler sleep problems have always just been part of our lives.
What Is Sleep?
Believe it or not, sleep is actually REALLY important! Why? Because when you sleep, your body is able to repair itself, regenerate, and grow! When What Is Sleep? came to my bookshop, I was thrilled! My kids already loved What Is Poop? and What Are Germs? which are part of this same series.
I love using books to talk to my kids about important things. According to them, I rarely know what I’m talking about, but if a real-life book tells them why sleep is important, well, then they might just believe it. The book talks about what happens when you sleep, why sleep is important, who needs sleep, and more.
I especially love that What Is Sleep? touches on dreams! So many kids struggle with bad dreams, so I love that this was included.
Toddler Sleep Problems: Our Story
We love this book and it has definitely helped open up a conversation about sleep, but as amazing as this book is, our toddler sleep problems were still there. Our son is almost 4 and has never been a good sleeper. In an attempt to get him to sleep, we tried:
- night lights
- essential oils
- gummy melatonin
- weighted blankets
- rewards charts
- being compassionate
- being stern
- laying in the room
- laying in his bed
- closing his door
- keeping his door open
- sitting in the room
- sitting in the hall
You name it, we tried it. It would take him hours to fall asleep at night and then he’d wake up several times during the night. We were exhausted! I was *this* close to losing my mind, and was willing to spend just about any amount of money to get some sleep.
Since this had been our lot in life for basically ever, I just assumed we were screwed and I was going to have to find a way to live life as a zombie and constantly fight with my husband. Several months ago, we had consulted THE sleep consultant in our area, and after meeting with her and trying her methods, we found ourselves in the same spot we were in. Unfortunately, this program lacked follow-up support, so we floundered.
