Think back to your childhood. Were there any books that stood out to you as favorites? For me, it was Richard Scarry, Mercer Mayer, and the American Girl books, specifically Felicity and Addy. There were many others along the way, too, but whenever I see those, or read them to my kids, I think back to my childhood. The You Choose books are going to be that for my kids.
I think You Choose may have been our very first Usborne Books & More book many years ago. It’s sort of an underrated book that doesn’t get talked about enough. We are on our second copy because the first one was torn and taped back up so many times from so much love. (Thank goodness for our 50% off replacement policy!)
What Is You Choose?
You Choose is an imaginative picture book published by Kane Miller (the “& More” in Usborne Books & More). This hardback book has regular, nice, glossy color pages that feature detailed and light-hearted illustrations by Nick Sharratt. I would personally recommend it to any child 2 and up. I think it would be a great tool to help young children point out objects and try to tell you what they are called. My children are 7 and 4 and have enjoyed it for years.
Why We Love You Choose
As a parent, reading with your kids is SO important, BUT let’s be honest, reading the same book over and over again can get annoying. Yeah, I said it.
With You Choose and You Choose in Space, you can read it over and over and never have the same story twice. Each page has a prompt, for example, “If you could live anywhere, where would you choose?” and then you look at these gorgeous illustrations and pick where you want to live. There are tons of options, so next time you read it (5 minutes from now), you can pick a different home.
My daughter and I flip the page as fast as we can to see who can claim the black and white couch first. The page has been torn during our pursuits. haha
Sometimes, after we’ve read it a couple times, we’ll start from the back of the book and read towards the front. Or, we’ve also read it by saying, “If you could live anywhere, where would you NOT want to live.”
You Choose in Space
In December 2018, when the new releases were announced, I was thrilled to tell my kids about You Choose in Space. I ordered it as soon as it became available and my kids screamed with excitement when we opened the box.
You Choose in Space follows the same concept except it focuses on getting on a space ship and going out into space. You pick your space room, space costume, which mix-and-match planet you would want to live on. It’s light on astronomy, heavy on fun and silliness. No surprise, it is a hit at our house.
I also love that it features kids of all skin colors and abilities. Diversity in children’s books is so important to me.
